Alright you fitness nuts (just like me) I would like to discuss something with all of you. This is not intended to argue or dispute anyone's theories or opinion but rather to appreciate and learn from different points of view because in case you don't know I always learn from others. I don't know it all and I have learned from some forum members here so here it goes. What is in your opinion The Most punishing leg exercise or exercises. There is no limit here on what exercises any of you consider the most punishing. For me it would be The Walking Barbell Lunge going uphill.. As far as machines go it would be The Hack Squat. Certainly I consider The Regular Squat the king of leg exercise but I find the Lunge to be more challenging for a number of reasons but I do not want to make my original post too long so it is your turn to lash out. Bring it on.
100 rep smith machine squats (smith allows your body to remain stable when you become really fatigued):
Use a weight you normally use for 25 reps on the smith machine, full squats - lower the glutes to the ankles.
Partial Partial Fulls:
These are like 21's - moderate weight - squats on smith machine - 7 reps at straight to parallel, 7 reps at ankle to parallel, 7 full reps (all 3 of these combined counts as one set of a 21 rep round). Do 10 sets of the 21 rep rounds.
Whoa that sounds like a fun intense one. How do you do it at the gym, get on a treadmill and raise the incline? Would a gym even allow a barbell on a treadmill? Well lunges aren't great on a treadmill anyway due to the pause in lunging.
This reminds me I've been wanting to get a weighted vest to substitute for holding a barbell on my shoulders.
Could wear that weighted vest outside and do walking lunges uphill YEEEAAAHHH
I use this as a finisher and it's called a "Leg Blaster". Got it from a trainer who trains skiers, mountain climbers, trail runners and other outdoor endurance athletes. This is done as a circuit with no rest between exercises.
-20 Air Squats
-20 Alternating Leg Lunges
-20 Jumping Alternating Leg Lunges
-10 Jumping Air Squats
My quads are burning and asking for mercy after I do this. It's the jumping lunges and squats that kill you. This also comes in handy as an "in-season" leg exercise during a period when you are focused on your sport and not spending your time in the gym.

The smith just for THOSE. There is merit to the smith for some things.
I am sure folks can do the same work on the free squat rack. I don't know if you have tried 100 rep squats but to do them straight through at moderate weight, you become very unstable by about the 70th rep.
Our trainer had us doing those for various leg work. None of us injured ourselves or had issues from using the smith from time to time. It was invented and is a popular machine and sits in most gyms for a reason.
