1. Eating relatively badly i.e. having junk food but not excessively say a can of coke a day and exercising everyday for about 30 mins running

OR

2. Doing no exercise everyday at all - only minimal walking but eating a very healthy diet (say within recommended levels of the food intake pyramid)?

Friend says 2 is much better off than 1 because people underestimate how much they really need to exercise to burn off the fat/junk?

Both are sub-optimal.

A poor diet will always undermine any good workout routine. Both are terrible options but if I had a gun to my head I'd still pick the working out with a sub-optimal diet so at least I can workout and enjoy food every so often.

It seems like your friend assumes weight is the ultimate indicator of health, which its not. But maybe he/she has different goals.

A bad diet affects your entire body, including your skin, so even working out you will never look or feel right.

I choose 2, even though both choices are less than optimal.

Is there a point to this question? Is the OP facing a dilemma of choosing one over the other? They are both bad.

Many people who eat a high quality, disciplined diet, can be very healthy with little to no exercise.

Yeah, that one can of Coke a day will probably kill you in about a thousand years.

I don't know. 365 cans of Coke in one year would surely add lbs to your body and put you at risk of several health issues after many years, including rotting teeth.
