Is there a good app for predetermining running distance? For example, if I want to go out and run 3 miles, is there an app where you can put in your starting location, that will then show you an ending location 3 miles away? I know there are plenty of apps to track distance via GPS (obviously after running, you would then know the distance for future runs). Just wondering if there are any apps that you can use pre-run for planning purposes to determine distance? I hope this question makes sense. Thanks.

Strava will allow you to create custom segments where you can predetermine your distances. In my experience it wasn’t overly accurate but close enough to get a rough idea. I believe map my run has similar capabilities. Google maps can also be used.

Thanks everyone for these suggestions. I will start looking at some of these. It seems like Map My Run has this capability. Will look into this later. Thanks again.

Google maps

Runkeeper will kinda do it - it searches routes recorded by users

But to do what exactly you want either takes way too much human capital or way too much computational power. for example, from my house there are literally thousands of possible routes to run an out-and-back or loop of 3.0 miles, possibly over 10,000 possible routes. A computer using google maps, etc. would return all of them and you'd have to sort through them. Or it would require a person to go through each and every road and trail in the world and rank how good they are to run on.

What about Runtastic? RunGo?
Android or iPhone?
Footpath?

I think, there could be something useful to you:

There used to be mapmyrun.com, runmyroute.com, etc. but unless something has changed in the past few months, their maps no longer work. I tried several sites some time ago and the maps didn't work on any of them.

I just used mapmyrun for a bike route 3 days ago. You may need a (free) account to do it now. I signed up years ago so I don't know if that's the difference.
