You can also buy meats, at BY Farms next to the Richardson, between North Pole and Fairbanks. But the beef from organically ground cattle can be quite expensive. I have purchased around 4 pounds of prime-cut meat of this kind, and have paid over $56.00. But since I usually have moose meat in the freezer, I don't buy meats at the supermarket.

The grocery buisness uses a sales gimmik to draw customers to the store. Called losse leader items. These items are sold at cost or possibly less to draw the costumer in, who usually leaves with more than the sale item making up for the loss leader.

Freight is shipped by weight and volume so both can be expensive it they take up much space. Not counting additional markup by the distributers.

Alcohol has extra taxes, and a distribution system similar to soda, just a reminder.

Arcticthaw... Where is this new Safeway you mentioned. When we were there, the two Safeways were at College/Old Steese and Airport/University. I didn't even know they were building a new one.

The one at Airport and University has been replaced. The demolished the University Center mall, put the new safeway on the lot to the east of where Pay n Save was and extends onto the foot print of the old Pay n Save end of the mall. Next to Airport road they built a small strip mall for Blockbuster and a couple of other tennants. the existing Safeway is still standing but they are removing all the internals. I believe they will demolish it too and build a gas stop there.

Wow. That's all been done in record time for Fairbanks. We left in the middle of May and none of that had been started.
