This has happened to me as well. I used to wear a 9.5 in most, but now wear an 8.5 or 8. I bought some heels recently that I think are a size 8 and slip a little.
When width increases, your foot fits further down towards the toe end. Thus it may seem your regular size is too long. I had this problem when I lost over 100 lbs. I went from a 7WW to a 6.5B.
