Another vote for Bare Minerals. I like that it is very light and subtle. I still look like myself.
When I tried mineral makeup (not Bare Minerals, but Jane Iredale), I thought it made my skin look dry and haggard, so I have just sort of written off that type of makeup.
Bare Minerals fan here. Most foundations cause me to break out pretty badly. My only alternative is using Garnier's BB cream which is kind of a tinted moisturizer. Neutrogena and Olay have them now as well.
Also love their lip glosses (Moxie & Buxom). I tend to get sets so it ends up being cheaper.
As for Mascara, I am in love with Benefit's They're Real! mascara. When I want a cheaper option, I will stick with the classic Maybelline Great Lash.
I had always bought drug store makeup but a couple of years ago I wondered if higher dollar make up would make a difference. I went to Sephora and bought about $200 worth of basics--Smashbox primer, Lorac foundation, ??? eyeliner, Buxom mascara. ($200 on makeup is a lot to me, but may not be to everyone else.) Anyway, I have slowly migrated back to the cheap stuff. I borrowed my daughter's Maybelline mousse foundation and liked it so much I bought some. Same with some cheap mascara--it may be Maybelline also. So if you want to experiment, I say start cheap and work your way up to more expensive.
Also, I bought and expensive powder brush at Sephora and it fell apart. I do love the Smashbox primer and haven't tried a cheaper version yet.
I use and love love love Tarte Smooth Operator. It's called a tinted moisturizer, but it covers nicely for me. And with all the good stuff in it, it's more like a BB cream in my opinion. And if I recall correctly while I was in the decision making process of buying it, they called it a foundation.
I've had massively bad luck with powder foundations -- all of them except Origins were WAY too drying for my weird skin. But I loved buying some samples and playing with them.... at least I didn't have to spend the full whack on something I couldn't use.... even Origins. On the second time around, the new improved one had soy in it -- and I'm allergic.
I personally don't have the skin type for mineral make-up but I know others who it works very well for.
I don't use Tarte but it is pretty good along with Urban Decay who has recently changed their formulas and I've heard good things from the newer version.
MAC has a large variety but I don't recommend it for you and I don't know anything about It Cosmetics.
OP sounds kind of granola/doesn't want to use strange chemicals. Whole foods have a large cosmetic section with organic make-up. The larger stores usually have a specialist assigned to that area if you need any help. I got a great all-natural lip gloss from whole foods and it looked wonderful but tasted like play-doh. Since then I have discovered MAC but I would go back to whole foods stuff once I get tired of professional type make-up products.
I like Tarte lip and cheek stains and I think Urban Decay has a similar feel. I have a UD blush that looks neon pink in the container but gives a very natural flushed look. And it's a mostly vegan brand, which is nice.
I'm with you on this...Tarte lip stains, Tarte eyeshadows, Urban Decay concealer. The latter is the closest in consistency I found to the discontinued Shiseido that I love so much. A little pricey but well worth the staying power. The lip stains taste fabulous too!
