Why would anyone follow a trend because "Its in". How about wearing what you like whether its in or not?
I have a particular style and I follow it because its what suits me and its a style that I like. I'm not a fashion trend follower who will go outside looking way out of my element just to be able to keep up with the current fashion trend and dont understand why anyone else would.

Lucky for them, they don't need you to understand.
Who said it's not to their liking? Maybe people wear things because it's "in" AND they like it. It doesn't have to be an either/or situation.
But there are many people who dont. I see it all the time. Someone would comment on how something is ugly and the person would respond with "but its in". So I ask, why would anyone step outside of their personal style to wear "whats in" even if its not to their liking. Is it acceptance? Is it attention?

You would have to ask them. I've never known anyone to wear something they don't like just because it's in.
But my guess is that their personal style is transitional. They don't define themselves by what they wear and are open to experimentation. Not everyone has as narrow a view of their "personal style" as you apparently do.
deevel79, the concept of "what's in" isn't used much past high school, in my experience. I can't imagine an adult using that phrase.
Most thinking adults wear what suits them these days. Unfortunately, that might includes pajamas in public places; "but it's comfortabulllllll" is the defense heard from the perpetrators. I subscribe to the principle of being presentable, always. This works seamlessly (ha!) with wearing styles and cuts that suit you.
It's easier to do your own thing when you are secure with your sense of style. Lots of pre-teens, teens and less so 20-somethings wear clothing that is in b/c that's what that age group does. They don't really understand that they can develop their own style yet. That's why the kid who does have their own style, often sticks out from the crowd. Of course, if a particular trend is in style and you like it, that's fine too.
