I recently got two new tats on my ankle... one a week ago and one yesterday... the first one I used A&E lotion and it scabbed big time!!! And now someone suggested I used preparation H cream on my tat?? Will this work to heal my tat and not cause a lot of scabbing??? What have you used?? Need some ideas for a good looking tattoo

I was advised to use unscented Vaseline. It worked great, I also put saran wrap over it at night, or if I would have clothing over it during the healing process.

A new tatt will scab over regardless, it's part of the process, just no scratching!!!

I used Vaseline when I got my stomach tattoo a few years ago, and I made sure to wear loose-fitting shirts as much as possible.

Do you mean A&D ointment or did you use something else?

Best healing I ever had on a tattoo (full back piece all black) was A&D ointment - you find it in the baby section. You have to put it on VERY sparingly. I had zero scabbing. Healed beautifully.

Sometimes scabbing is hard to avoid because of where the tattoo is. Not enough moisture or too much can also cause scabbing. Flaking is normal.

I've always been told Vaseline can pull out color.

Possibly Vaseline and some kind of ointment (Neosporin)? Not sure about this, don't have a tat.

You don't want to use anything with lanolin or petroleum jelly on tattoos... both can clog the pores and pull out colors.

A&D ointment is good, but my favorite is a brand called aquaphor.

I would really question the knowledge of a tattoo artist that recommends vaseline.

Aquaphor is primarily petroleum jelly and it also contains lanolin.

I should have specified

I use Aquaphor after the healing process is complete, after it's done scabbing/leaking etc. and the skin is healed.

I use A&D sparingly for the first few weeks.
