Chaps is not a low-end brand; low end brands are Hanes and Fruit of the Loom; Chaps is not in the same class, otherwise it would be sold at Walmart.
As for capitalizing IZOD, that is the way IZOD is properly capitalized.
Give me a break - Chaps is Kohl's minus 30% where is the class? It is inexpensive, highly marketed for those who need "label" at low cost. Nothing wrong with that.
In HS I had a denim jacket with nothing but labels as liner - Van Laak to Bogner and Burberry - whatever was in the closets at home. Who cares about labels. BTW - I still cut them out.
Preppy is much more a state of being than a clothing line.
You can wear all the Nantucket Reds, with Sea Isle Cotton and blucher moccs and still not be preppy while having on the preppiest outfit ever.

"Preppy" simply is short for "prep or preparatory" school. As such reflects whatever fashions are favored by certain demographics of the WASP/Ivy League set who traditionally made up the ranks of those attending such places. In England you have "Sloane Rangers" for instance.
Things like Bass Weejuns, Talbots, Gucci (loafers and some accessories), Brooks Brothers and some others aren't "preppy/Ivy League" or even WASP per se; just that over the years those persons have come to favor goods sold by those brands. Now they did so at first and mainly because then and or now the goods were known not just for a bit of style, but quality.
Keeping in line with their Protestant roots, WASPS detest blatant displays of wealth. They do demand and want things to be serviceable and of good quality. They will wear and or keep such things literally until failing apart.
Live in the rich heartland of preppy/Ivy League/WASP Central (Upper Eastside of Manhattan, NYC), and see such persons day in and out. People walking around in "shabby" or whatever clothing, driving an old beater, but yet have more money in the bank/assets than God.
That a Jewish man (Ralph Lif****z) has founded a brand that many consider de facto representation of the "horsey", or "WASP", or "preppy" set shows the value of excellent marketing if nothing else.

You need to do some research.
Far as the preppy/Ivy League set are concerned the original IZOD peaked along time ago. Yes, well recall that little Crocodile well into the 1980's but it long since has been dropped by la Belle Monde.
You answered your own question. Fact that Izod brand was ceased production, only to be restarted again a few times; each becoming more and more mass market tells something.
You might find preppies or whoever today wearing vintage Izod, but the new stuff is strictly for the punters and other NQOCD sorts.
I have seen past threads in these forums, and many users don't consider Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, or IZOD to be preppy brands. I wonder why? While they are somewhat less popular among the preppy crowd than Polo Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, or Vineyard Vines, their styles are somewhat similar. I previously asked whether or not Tommy Hilfiger is a preppy brand, and most responses were no.
Tommy Hilfiger mostly is in the Classic Preppy category as far as style goes.
Nautica is in the Nautical Preppy category.
IZOD spans multiple preppy categories, from Classic (Premium Essentials), Nautical (Saltwater Collection), and Performance (Advantage and Golf).
So why aren't these brands considered preppy?
Here’s the thing, PJ: YOU are free to choose those brands to wear, and to consider them preppy. It is a free country. You can think whatever you want. But you cannot convince or force others to think the way you do. No amount of arguing will change others’ fixed opinions. If wealthy, upper class people aren’t wearing the brands you favor, then they are at best, faux preppy. If you cannot afford Brooks Brothers or Burberry, then wear what you CAN afford, and be content.
I know you are invested in the brands you wear. So, you do you. Wear what you like. It is a free country.
But you cannot adjust reality. And in the grand scheme of things being preppy or not does not matter.
