Yes it is, in many circles. Maybe in your community it's appropriate; so that's fine, if your friends and family wear black to a wedding.

This becomes a problem when people cross communities/cultures and they don't realize they're offending others by not knowing what's appropriate and expected in that community.

And then, again, there are those who don't care at all if they're offensive to other people.

People do wear black to a wedding, but, no, you're not supposed to. Nor white.

Save the black sundress to wear on the trip. You have time to find something that won't cost a lot. See if there is something on rent the runway that would work. Or you could find something on shopgoodwill or look for vintage.

Wear what you want. Your dress sounds lovely and, in this day and age, no one really cares if you wear black to a wedding so long as the style of the dress itself is appropriate to the venue.

Make you accessories colorful to detract from the black. Hot pink bracelets, and a floral scarf tied as a sash will add color.

I've worn both black and white dresses to weddings and nobody cared.
I've also been to weddings where the bridesmaids all wore black, and even one where the bride wore black.

Rules, schmules.

Do goths get married? Wouldn't they wear black if they did?

I went to a black tie evening wedding and wore a black dress. Many people had black on. So you aren’t supposed to wear black at any wedding?

That's formal and in a church, I suppose.

Beach weddings are far from formal...black can look harsh in the light of day.

Why are you so insistent on black?
Dozens and dozens of colors more flattering for a day, casual wedding....

I'd say avoid the black at a wedding if possible.

But I would also say that guests obsess far too much about what they are wearing when it's not their day, no one is really paying attention, and no one will really care at the end of the day.

Sometimes I am not very helpful.
