Its nice to give compliments. not false ones but if I like something belonging to someone I always pass a remark about how pretty. and it makes the person feel good too... I never give false compliments though.
Sure. Its nice to be nice. I don't comment on the value, mostly because jewelry's monetary value doesn't matter to me. My compliment is about how it looks on the wearer. A cheap home made craft piece can look great on the right person. An expensive ostentatious piece can look terrible on the wrong one.

I agree in principle, but in practice is dicey. I suggest that men and women be very careful about compliments, especially in professional settings.

The workplace is a minefield now. You are so right - the days of a casual compliment are over.
I'm retired and I still enjoy putting effort into my appearance. I get compliments from strangers and I feel comfortable giving them too. Usually the compliments are about clothing or hairstyle but there have been occasions when a ring or necklace is so pretty I've complimented the owner on it.
No, because if stolen soon after, I would be the prime suspect.
