Medicaid is here, but it is very limited. Over 65, pregnant female are about the only people who qualify.

The state did not expand their medicaid program when the AHCA came in. You can apply on line.

That's the age for medicare, not medicaid.

Medicaid is pretty much the poor and disabled, and pregnant women I believe.

Like all states, Florida offers Medicaid, but as previous posters noted, eligibility is pretty limited. Primarily pregnant women, low income families with kids, the aged and disabled and those on SSI. And of course there are income restrictions. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration is the state agency that operated the program. You can start at AHCA's website: AHCA: Medicaid Services

The other aspect of Florida Medicaid not yet mentioned is that it's very difficult for 'qualified' folks to locate doctors who will accept Medicaid. In some respects, the ongoing Medicaid problem is likely similar to the situation folks will find under Obamacare .... once they get registered. Nothing is free ... and if it is, that's about all it's worth.

If you are low income you can get enrolled in the Federal insurance subsidy program that the feds set up here. If you're VERY low income, nada. It's a glitch in the system that occurred when the courts ruled that states could opt out. If my wife made $11,500 a year her insurance would have cost her practically nothing w/ the subsidies. She makes maybe half that, so her lowest cost insurance premium would have been nearly $300 a month, about what she makes at her job. Since people w/ pre existing conditions can no longer be denied insurance, for now we're just going to use the walk in clinics ($100 a pop for horse doctors), and if something major occurs we'll hope we can get her enrolled after the fact. Or, maybe we'll just move back to a state w/ the medicaid program in place before something occurs.

I think jghorton misunderstands the Obama care program. If someone qualifies (it's totally income related) they can pick and choose among private insurers on the marketplace website, and pick the level of coverage/cost that they can afford. There will be no issue w/ finding a doctor to take the insurance, as it isn't medicaid, it's private party insurance. There will be a premium to pay, and that amount will depend on whether or not the applicant qualifies for federal subsidies. SSD and SSI recipients are not eligible for any of this as they have Medicare. My Medicare Part B costs well over $100 a month, but if my income were the same (but not from SSD) I would qualify for the federal insurance program and my monthly insurance amount would be practically nothing. But I'm not eligible for that. When I turn 65 in a few years my SSD will be shifted to SS, but that will have no effect on this either, as SS recipients get Medicare, not Obamacare.

DCF determines Medicaid eligibility for:

Parents and caretakers relatives of children
Children
Pregnant women
Former Foster Care Individuals
Non-citizens with medical emergencies
Aged or disabled individuals not currently receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Also Medicare doesn't cover a lot as doctors want far more.
