I am a 25 year old single mother currently living in New York I will be receiving a bachelor's degree in Spanish in February of 2009 but I am interested in doing a certification in elementary education. I have received many mixed reviews about living in Florida as to the education for my eight year old daughter and the cost of living being too high for a teacher's salary. I am most interested in living in pompano beach or somewhere around there. Any suggestions?

I suggest North Port in SW Florida. IMO, the schools are great and the housing costs are low right now. It is located 25 minutes from the beaches. From what I understand Sarasota county pay their teachers very well (one of the highest in the state). My kids attend Pine View School and we are very pleased.

Pompano Beach couldn't be a worse place to teach. I actually agree with the above poster. Sarasota County schools have some of the highest pay in the state and run a better than average system, although I did some research into the regular public schools in North Port and they don't "look" good but research doesn't tell the whole story, and some others will argue that there is no such thing as a good public school.

Anyway, yeah, avoid Pompano. High cost of living, depressed schools, high crime rate. If you were going to consider somewhere in SE Florida I would be looking into the communities west of University Dr, like Davie, Weston, Coral Springs, Cooper City, Plantation etc, or further north in western communities in Palm Beach County

Unfortunately, it will be tough today for a single mom on a teachers salary to live in South Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, the Keys) comfortably in a safe area. Maybe in the panhandle, Jacksonville, north florida or smaller cities like Ocala, it may be much more affordable for a new teacher. But South Florida will be tough.

Yes, Schools in the Northeast are better for some reason, I have heard this for a long time. Not sure how Broward or Palm Beach place teachers. But in Miami-Dade usually new teachers get put in the worst/undersirable schools.

Yeah, Compelled I guess I should have been more clear in my post.

I would look more towards the Venice or Sarasota-Osprey areas for teaching and look to North Port for housing. There are many teachers that live in North Port but teach up in Osprey at Pine View.

The school systems in Lee and Collier County are looking for teachers that speak Spanish. But the cost of living may be too high in Collier. I don't know much about the other coast but good luck!

Would you care to share North Port's proximity to Pompano, which is where the OP is interested in going?

Default thank you everyone for your replies

I am feeling a bit gloomed about Florida now but I am going to look into Sarasota now. I would really like to leave the hectic life schedule here in NY but I would also like to live a decent lifestyle. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. I was wondering how the job market for teachers is there in Sarasota?

I'm not really sure. I would give the school board a call and see if they are currently hiring.
