You mean those places where votes actually get counted, crime is low and it hasn't been ruined by overdevelopment and corruption?

Those places?

I think they will be just fine without you.

That means we need more money for schools, police, etc. But the much poorer areas of north Florida squeeze as much money as they can from the south, and they don't give a rat's posterior how it hurts the people in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm. This is why it's been proposed by some local leaders that south Florida would be much better off divorcing itself from our poor relations up north. Will it ever happen? If only.
Ummmmm...WHO votes for the people that get sent to Tallahassee to make decisions?

You do.

Where is that? Except for the overdevelopment part. There seems to be this misconception that a prevalent southern accent leads to a lower crime rate (better everything really) when statistically that just isn't true. Would you ever think your (beautiful I might add) Leon County has a higher crime rate than that cesspool down south called Broward County? Well, it does. I'm intending to bash or boost any particular part of the state, but simply stating what's true.

And no, I don't agree with the "redneck losers" statement you were replying to either. However the highest crime areas are actually in central and north FL. Corruption can't be measured, but although Miami is a clear leader, I wouldn't say the rest of South Florida, while still bad, is any worse than the rest of the state. All of FL sucks at voting too.

Total Index Crime by County, 2007

Actually, all of Florida does not suck at voting. My county had no problems. Most of the other 66 counties had no significant problems. Somehow the incompetence and corruption of a handful of counties in south Florida gets attributed to the whole state.

Crime rates can be misleading too - Leon's "crime rate" is restricted to very particular parts of the county, where elsewhere it is so low that it isn't even noticeable.

Sure there is crime everywhere, but South Florida and Miami-Dade in particular win the trophy for local government corruption hands down, or don't you read the papers?

What I object to on this thread is the idea that "Tallahassee" is siphoning off resources from South Florida. That simply is not true, and to the extent it may be, people need to understand that it is the LEGISLATURE that is to blame and "Tallahassee" per se has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. If anything, and I am in a position to know, it is the other way around entirely.

The people that control how resources get allocated are elected from all over the state. They meet in Tallahassee, and that's about as far as Tallahassee is involved. Voters IN SOUTH FLORIDA elected the people that make those decisions, and that's where the criticism should be directed.

If that happened, it would set off a chain reaction. We would have West Florida (everything west of the Suwannee)....East Florida (Jacksonville, I-4 Corridor, SW Florida)....South Florida (PB,Brow,MD)...and, um, the State of the Conch Republic? (Florida Keys)

That would probably be for the best anyways...Tallahassee is too corrupt as it is right now.

Good analegy. I wouldn't place Central Florida with any part of North Florida(west or east). Too many midwesterners and new yorkers(even in some rual areas that date a few generations back have yankee origins). Only in certian isolated pockets is there southern culture as a majority. Hillsborough and Orange county are overrun with migrants but the areas to the north of them are in my eyes southern. Thats the divide between "Northern "and "Southern" Florida .

Explain how Tallahassee is "corrupt".

You sent the legislators up here, no?

I've only been able to take part, legally, in one statewide election...2006. In that election, only one person I voted for made it to office....the CFO. I did my part to try to remove the corruption...it's not my fault that the rest of the state has their collective heads up their bums.

Plus, no, not everyone votes for everyone in Tallahassee. Only one district sends Marco Rubio to TLH, no one else got to vote for him as Speaker...and he's probably the biggest piece of pond scum in TLH. Charlie Crist is too busy eyeing the VP to give a crap about FL, which he seems to not mind if the state goes into bankruptcy while he's in office.

The insurance companies are too busy being in the pockets of the legislators who had a fun time distracting us from the insurance issue to "lower property taxes"...which really weren't lowered and just distracted the general electorate from the increasing rates and cancellations from insurance companies.

Oh, and shall we even take a mention of the FCAT and the ever decreasing funds given to our schools, resulting in a decreasing level of education and quality of schools..in a state that was already poorly educated to begin with?

There is just so much crap that one can get on the FL State Government...I don't know where to continue.
