Insurance agents have to have (using the term very loosely) a sort of "malpractice insurance".
Every office carries Errors and Omission Insurance.
Generally the agents pay a fee on every transaction towards this.

Default You can get a FL drivers license or for that matter a FAA Private Pilot’s license with less. See Below:

The newbe licensee whether it be for a profession or otherwise has a minimum criteria to meet before they can gain practice and expertise for the license they hold. The minimum standard is just a starting point – Maybe Tallahassee should reexamine a whole lot more than just Real Estate Professionals… as a 16 yr old can certainly do much more harm driving a car than can a realtor practicing the eight Services of Real Estate in Florida. And if doctors were soo perfect they wouldn’t need malpractice ins.

PS BTW I have a license to drive a, pilots license, and a license to sell real estate [among others] and they are all only as good as the efforts I made and continue to make to be good at each one of them

Florida Drivers License

Class E Exam Requirements - Minimum Age 16
Road Rules
Road Signs
Driving
Vision

Hearing - Drivers applying for a license who are deaf, or cannot hear conversation spoken in a normal tone of voice, are restricted to driving with an outside rearview mirror which should be mounted on the left side of the vehicle, or wearing of a hearing aid.
Vision - Vision testing, using an eye machine located on the counter, is conducted in all driver license offices. Visual acuity readings worse than 20/40 are referred to an eye specialist. Color blindness will not cause any special condition for licensing.
Road Signs - consists of 20 questions regarding road signs, with multiple choice answers.
Road Rules - consists of 20 questions regarding traffic laws and safety, with multiple choice answers.
Hearing Driving Test –
be certified by parent or guardian to have at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training, at least 10 of which must be at night.

Private Pilots License - you must
• be at least 17 years
• have a current FAA third-class medical certificate
• log at least 40 hours of flight
• have at least 20 hours of flight with an instructor
• have at least 10 hours of solo flight
• pass the FAA Private Pilot Airmen Knowledge written test
• pass a FAA Private Pilot flight exam

I'm wondering what it is you would like to see? What is it that you think would take a college degree, or is that not what you are looking for?
There is also continuing education requirements. There is also on the job experience. Life experience. That's why you interview or meet with different Realtors® to find out which one fits your needs best. Not much unlike going to a...doctor/accountant/hairdresser/car mechanic, or anyone else you hire to do a job.

The MLS is not state owned so Tallahasee has nothing to do with it. There is no reason to make a tool/data base paid for, maintained and improved by Realtors® free to all or open to all. Make your own database.

Well, there you do have a point: it is always "buyer beware."
You are right, it is up to the individual to decide on whomever he/she chooses to give him service, be that a hairdresser, or doctor.
I guess you guys may be right: 63 hours is all it takes to have license to give bad advice such as "Buy now or be priced out forever" in 2005.

Lightbulb Defintion Professional

of, relating to, or characteristic of a profession b: engaged in one of the learned professions c (1): characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession (2): exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace2 a: participating for gain or livelihood in an activity or field of endeavor often engaged in by amateurs <a professional golfer> b: having a particular profession as a permanent career <a professional soldier> c: engaged in by persons receiving financial return <professional football>3: following a line of conduct as though it were a profession

source: professional - Definition from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

We must be careful how we defined a professional. many members without a degree are considered professionals, or better Subject Matter Expert. The skills and commitment to your job is what derives your professional trait.

If the intent was to lessen the Realtor profession (my impression on some of the comments) is not warrant. We have excellent Realtor and some that are not as good. Normally their actions automatically flush them from the system and governing rules by the state.

To answer Jbravo question: yes more training in any profession is the goal, but like in any profession the individual not the profession is the one that triumphs or fails to the customers or them selfs.

Thank you.

I had this one in mind when I posted.

Local joke is that more people in Florida have real estate licences than drivers licenses!

You don't need a license in Florida to give advice or have an opinion.

I think the Real Estate course which Realtors are required to take is a joke. They make you memorize so much trivial stuff and then the topics you really need to learn, such as contracts, handling sales and listings, paperwork trail, and all the complicated steps required in a transaction, is virtually ignored.
