Sarasota and Naples are the only 2 outside of the Tampa area i would live in SW Florida. NP is terrible.

High Springs or Alachua. Both are in Alachua County which is in North Central Florida.

I live in North Port and happen to like it. The housing is affordable, the Sarasota county school system is terrific, and there's lots of things for the kids to do. So, Speak for yourself on the NP comment. The average age in NP is 38, which is perfect for me being 37.

You could get a newer home for under your budget.

Good luck with your search!

I am looking for the same thing, an affordable but nice place to live in FL. I have created a spreadsheet that lists all the things that are important to my family, ie., median housing costs, crime index, population, cost of living index, etc. Then as people on this forum mention nice places, I look up the information here on city-data and add it to my spreadsheet. I have a list of about 30 cities and have started to rank them so when we start seriously looking at area's, I can refer to my chart. I live in a northern suburb of Illinois now, and am using that as a benchmark. So, I dont want to live anyplace that has a higher cost of living or median house price. I"m loving the real estate taxes in FL- it's 2.1 where I live and most of the places in FL are around 1% yea!

It would be nice to see your list once you have your research done. I'm sure it could help many people and get them looking in the right areas. Sounds like you've done a lot of work on your research.
