I haven't added it all up (since I've been buying things for Thanksgiving along with other "regular" groceries as well as buying things I wouldn't normally because we'll be having guests in the house but aren't for Thanksgiving dinner) but I'd guess $100-ish (give or take 20)....for dinner for 8. Not too bad IMO. I'd much prefer to eat at my own table, knowing the food is prepared to my liking and having the extra glass of wine without worrying about it.....

I'm licking the screen already!!!!!!!
Considering how rich cheesecake is, and what a small slice comprises a portion, I dont think thats bad at all.
Use the best, get the best results, thats my motto!

Thank you. It is a beautiful site.
See the link. It came out looking just like the photo. Except I'm making a raspberry glaze to drizzle over the top with chocolate curls on top.

$25 for an 8-12 pound turkey?

I haven't seen any supermarket in my area selling turkeys for over $.79 a pound.

For $25 it would be a turkey weighing over 30 pounds

In 1955, tom turkeys were .39 per pound; hens were .49. They were considered a good value then. This was a time when someone could buy a new Cadillac for 5k, a brick bungalow for 10-15k, and the average person made about 5k per year. Ground beef was also .39 per pound. Oh yes, an office visit with our doctor was $3. That's not a typo.

Turkey is about the best food value there is.

2 turkeys $7 (I got them young and dressed them myself)
two geese $5 (same thing)
Venison free
8 acorn squash (from my garden) Free
10 pounds of flour $6
yeast $1
two pounds of butter $5
pecans (several days and nights invested in picking and cracking) free
Pumpkin free
green beans free
assorted peppers free
rhubarb free
pickled asparagus free
eggs free
pickles free
heavy raw cream $10 a quart
mushrooms $5
Apples, Peaches, Pears, figs are free
10 pounds of potatoes $5

I guess it will cost about $50 to feed 16-20 people.......lots and lots of left overs, but I started last March preparing everything. It takes time to grow a goose or a turkey. beans, squash, onions, cucumbers, rhubarb, persimmons, pecans, walnuts, etc don't occur overnight either. but we are making enough that we will eat well into the next week on left overs.

It's so strange seeing turkeys range in price so much, here a Jenny-o was like .58 a pound.
The Butterball turkeys were like .98 a pound. My 23 pound jenny-o was under $14.00..
