Go to just about any restaurant and you will find a hamburger on the menu. That says volumes.

Yeah but much of it has its origins in other countries; it's not indigenous.

I voted hambugers because McDonald/fast/junk food is synonymous with American food in the eyes of the rest of the world. Much of the really great food in America is imported from other countries (Mexican, Carribean, Italian, etc and etc) or is very regional - coney island type hot dogs, or....well I cannot think of any other food indigenous to America.

Basically, apart from soda/pop and fast food and horrible concoctions made with marshmallows and jello, there is no real "American cuisine." Even the famous southern-type cooking has its roots in other countries.

Steak. No other country makes it so well. Never buy steak anywhere else, you will be disappointed.

Am sure Italians would beg to differ....

I went hotdog, although hamburger is also an obvious choice.

Hamburgers, without a doubt.

We were in Berlin a few years back and went to a big outdoor festival. One part had a foods of the world type theme where they had food stalls set up for Greece, China, Italy, etc. The tent with the U.S. stars and stripes on it was turning out nothing but hamburgers and cheeseburgers, so at the very least that was their concept of what American food was.

We had some partners from France in town on business a couple years back. First night we asked them if they wanted to go out for steaks, nope they wanted American style cheeseburgers. One guy even said his two missions were to eat cheeseburgers and obtain a San Antonio Spurs NBA jersey for his son. We took 'em to Red Robin and they were in heaven.

Hamburgers and apple pie.

Both of which, if cooked properly, are really delicious!
