I eat fish because it is enjoyable to eat, not because of cholesterol content.
thank you, us too. I think some of these warning go a little too far. I was raised on fish (yes, it normally was caught by my dad and not the fish producers, but not always. If I could afford it we would have fish three or four times a week: I can't so we don't. We pretty much have to depend on frozen fish so it is shrimp, salmon or things like Talapia or Orange roughy. fforsy. s) but farmers)
I stay away from sharks, piranhas, electric eels and sometimes barracudas.
I buy domestic catfish and domestic tilapia whenever I can, and only Gulf shrimp, although they've taken some of the enjoyment of that away now with the apparent oil contamination.
Other than that, all of our fish is caught by myself or by friends, right here in our local waters.
Thanks for the great information, Hunter and Dawn!
I am always trying to figure out which fish to avoid due to over-fishing and contaminants, and it makes my head spin trying to keep it straight! I buy fish both because of low-cholesterol and because we like it, I hadn't realized tilapia had high-cholesterol. Thanks so much for that tip, applepick! I have never bought it, now I definitely won't. And I know our local waters have mercury so I'd never eat "wild" local fish, either. I should print out a list and bring it with me, because I always forget what to avoid when I'm at the store. Stores don't make it easy. For instance, we love cod, and I know Atlantic cod is almost endangered, but I can't find Pacific cod. If more people bought fish responsibly it would make a huge difference in the over-fishing.

anyone that can catch their own makes me sick or makes me want to cry..We do have a few trout for local fishing and of course Cat Fish, but the really good fish (other than trout) has to be shipped to us. That is what we scrafice for living in the beautiful Ozarks..
According to an article in the current Consumers Reports, a very high (but unknown) proportion of fish offered for retail sale is mis-labeled, and it not the fish you think it is. So, quite often, you don't know what you' re getting in the first place.

I have heard the same thing and we are all alive to talk about it... I know when I eat Salmon it is Salmon, there is no way of discising the flavor, the same with shell fish.
Thanks for posting the article. Sorry to see that it is yet another time crunch, deadline, have to come up with something or get my back side fired useless... stain on the industry.

That is what Walmart is pushing big time........Talapia............pure dreck. That stuff tastes like cardboard and has a very poor Omega profile......farm raised junk.
I like tilapia, because it is firm and relatively flavor-neutral it works great in things like fish curry or a sichuan style stir-fry dish.
