I'm with SATX on the pecans. Plenty of trees around to go find my own. Wish I could get back to where I used to live along the Ohio River. Wouldn't take long to have a 5 gallon bucket full. Plus we have a walnut tree in the back yard. I'm not big on walnuts and thank goodness this was one of the "off years" for the walnut tree. Don't have to rake them up this year.
I don't "get" the concept of "holiday nuts" vs. "year-round nuts".
Is that a regional thing or something ?
Nuts cost the same at all times of year here.
There are "holiday" versions of some nuts, like Planters peanuts with candy coatings,
that's all I can bring to mind for the phrase "holiday nuts"-but they're no less pricey.
The price of nuts has skyrocketed, but I need them, so I close my eyes and place them in the cart. I am very careful to not notice the price, because it just upsets me.
Mostly, I buy the big packages at Costco. The bulk bins at Winco seem to be close to the same price.
I've got pecan trees and walnut trees, but they are years away from being mature enough to produce nuts.
When it comes to something I really, really love . . . price is (almost) no object. I will often buy three jars of the Mauna Loa macadamia nuts at the local Safeway for around $7/jar. It is a splurge, but so yummy at cocktail hour.
This time of year, I love good old hazelnuts. Haven't bought any yet, so no price info for my area.
nuts.com is where get mine, they have way better deals all the time. i just went out to pick some up yesterday and the prices were crazy high, 12.99/lb almonds, etc. i like nuts but not for that much.
I always look forward to buying nuts on sale this time of year cause they are so expensive the rest of the year. Also I store them in the freezer for year round use.
My Food Lion here in N.C. has a "Sale" on pecans...10 ounces for $6.89--then you read the small print--regular price is a whopping $6.99- only 10 cents off.
DH just called from the store where he found 16 oz pecans for $8.00 but they are still in the shell. How much can I figure the yield of pecans will be?
Not sure what walnuts are- are they typically cheaper than pecans?
So please tell us what state and which store and price your holiday nuts are.
I live in Northern Illinois (about 20 miles south of Wisconsin state line) and just last week I was at Blaine's Farm and Fleet (love that store - they have everything from household goods to livestock supplies) and they had nuts on sale. I bought 2- 1 lb. bags of shelled pecans halves for $7.00 each and 2- 1 lb. bags of shelled walnut halves for $6.00 each. I bake a lot and these are what I use the most. I keep them in my freezer and use them when I need them - they never go bad. I just have to make sure hubby doesn't find them and eat all the pecans before I can use them!!! They are always expensive, but I've been buying them at F&F since we moved here a couple of years ago and they are always very fresh and certainly cheaper than any I've found at any local grocery stores. I won't fool with the ones in the shell - not only time consuming but the shells add to the package weight and they get thrown away anyway. I personally would rather pay more and not have the bother.
