and if the recipe calls for salted butter and you only have unsalted, how much salt do you need to add per stick of butter.

I haven't bought salted butter in years but see a recipe I want to try which calls for salted. makes me wonder what people use salted butter for besides baking?

I googled salted vs unsalted butter and a zillions entries came up. here http://www.thekitchn.com/salted-butter-v-18008is just one. still I want to hear from other cooks

I use salted butter for everything, from toast to corn to cooking seafood in garlic butter. I haven't bought unsalted in years.

I too use salted butter for everything, except when I bake German Christmas sweets or special type of ,,Torte''I use unsalted butter. Usually my German Baking book tells me how much salt to add.

Salted butter keeps longer. Unsalted butter spoils more quickly. That's the key difference.

Use unsalted for delicate tasting items that do not require salt. Reduce the salt you add to recipes which call for added salt. You can always correct the seasoning later.

Love salted butter for my popcorn. I pop on the stove and leave the microwave stuff to the lazy folks. Part of a stick of butter in the microwave for 45 seconds and you'll be wiping your fingers on your pants legs in no time! lol

the link i posted before didn't work,,,,maybe this will--as much as 3/4 teaspoon salt in one stick of salted butter yikes. you would think that would mess up many recipes, especially for baking.

Yeah, I wouldn't add any salt unless it tastes funny. Many recipes state "salted butter" to keep people from using margarine in place of butter.

I agree with OpenD - I buy salted because it lasts longer and we don't use a lot of butter in my house. Many baking recipes call for unsalted but it is rare that a recipe turns out too salty if you follow the same measurements. If I am unsure, I will decrease the added salt by 1/4 teaspoon.
