Well, I moved to a teeny tourist town not long ago, with an idea of operating a seasonal food cart near the bicycle trail that runs through town.
I had in mind a shave ice cart, and the town council approved it - but now I discover that the next town four miles down the trail has a shave ice vendor. I've never seen it and it's not on the chamber list, but people tell me that it was there last season.
Boo hoo!
So, now I have to figure out another idea for a food cart. It must:
- cater to bicyclists who will continue on down the trail, so it can't be any kind of heavy food.
- can't be pie or frozen yoghurt as those vendors are already in town.
- be a real "cart" food - I do not want a noisy generator near the trail, and neither does the council.
- be easy for me to make - something that would easily pass health code inspection.
- be something that can be sold May - September
Anybody have any creative ideas?
I'm thinking frozen fruit bars now, but am wide open to all suggestions.
Because it is downhill, a very light boost of solids may be tolerable. Fresh fruit cups (to include bananas a high source of potassium for those muscles burning calories) with a dollop of plain yogurt, ricotta cheese or sour cream topped with either a mint or basil sprig for decoration or consumption.
What do my kids always want me to buy them? Real lemonade, made with fresh lemons. Add some raspberries. They also like cheese on sticks. Maybe a kabob cart, different types of food on a stick, fruit, cheese, meat, marshmallows, you could have different types of kabobs.
One of the most successful stands where we vacation sells homemade paletas and lemonade. If you have ever eaten a paleta you know how could they can be. Make them yourself to cut-out the middleman and increase your profit.
Fruit and vegetable smoothies, I love the fresh lemonade idea, and/or frozen yogurt pops. You could also sell regular Chobani with the option of dumping toppings on, like nuts and granola.
