We did not drink soda growing up except on special occasions. My mom was from Michigan though and so we were introduced to Vernor's. It's one of the few soft drinks I will drink today. I love that I can get it at mt HEB's in Texas!
Howdy! From one Michigan transplant to another----now living in Texas! Oh, yes, Vernor's was my favorite growing up. Like you, we didn't have "pop" unless we were having company. It was a great party drink mixer. Also, great if you had stomach upsets. Its not the same now, I think they've changed the formula, it doesn't quite taste the same. I wouldn't really call Izze sparkling juice a soda with a regional cult following. Target sells them all over the country, and has been for years. I think Whole Foods and just about every other grocery store also carries that brand.
Same with Dad's root beer and Vernors Ginger Ale. Well they're not at Target, but you can find big box stores that carry them just about anywhere in the country. But I guess they get more of a pass considering they've been around a whole lot longer then Izze.
To me a soda that has a regional cult following would be something you can only get in that region. Like Cheerwine. Its mainly found in the Carolinas, and Krispy Creme even did a limited edition Cheerwine doughnut there. You can probably find it in some specialty shops around the country, but I can't go to Target or any of my local grocery stores in Missouri and get it.
Or Vess Soda (which wasn't on the list). You can find them in grocery stores around St. Louis, but that is about it. They've been around for nearly 100 years, but have remained a local soda.
Ski soda would be another one that I would consider to have a regional cult following.

Dollar Tree sells Dad's Root Beer, so does World Market and K-Mart.
Vernors is distributed in 33 states, so while it might not be national, I would hardly call something that is available in over half the states as having a regional cult following. I've never had a problem finding it, usually beverage retail stores (Like BevMO or Friar Tucks) will have it even if they're not in their usual distribution area.

Like many of the sodas, it was originally a health tonic. His Cel-Ray soda is made with celery seed to improve the health of immigrant children.
It's still popular in NYC. Especially at Jewish delicatessens. My favorite flavors are cream (vanilla) and Cel-Ray. The second is an acquired taste but yes, it tastes like celery soda pop.
Upscale markets around the US have it now. Wegman's and Whole Food.
I cut out soda 14 years ago. Bad for your teeth plus, I'm hypoglycemic so my body gets really pissed at me when I drink it. Used to love Mr. Pibb though.
