I wish K & W Cafeteria in North Carolina would come to Florida. It has good food at fair prices. Every time I go to North Carolina I have their seven layer salad and a slice of pie. Boy do I love their pie.
If I'm going to another state, the last thing I want to do is eat at a chain restaurant. I'm looking for whatever the best is that is unique to that place (not necessarily most expensive, but the best - could be a dive for all I care if the food is outstanding).
This sort of makes me think of Americans who go on tours of foreign countries and are upset that there isn't a McDonald's and that there are so many foreigners in the foreign country. They might as well have stayed home.
I agree with you about wanting unique dining, especially when it comes to foreign countries; however, atmosphere is important to me, so no dives.
El Pollo Loco and In 'n Out. Son misses Whataburger.
Well you got my picks, I live in the SE, but used to live in Cali and Texas.

We were excited to get 5 Guys in our area. I've been there twice and have been disappointed. 5 Guys is higher priced than it should be and their food is much more greasy. There are certainly better choices...could just be the franchise where we live. But the locations here are usually busy...

Culver's is very good, nice atmosphere and love their ice cream!
skyline chilli , yes there are several in the Midwest but there are hardly any in the south , you would think with all the Midwesterners visiting myrtle beach they would put one there but nope ...at least I can get it in the can from krogers and publix but it is not nearly as good as going to the restaurant .
For all of you who put 5 guys burgers and fries , we have a local place called cookout that makes 5 guys look like slumburgers .
RED Robin-NO nasty burgers and way too exspensive.
For us, In&Out is number 1. Some of the others listed are avaiable in so many states they will soon be available in all states except maybe Alaska and Hawaii. We are not huge chain restaurant eaters, but it is nice to know what you can expect if you are traveling and want to stop for a bite to eat.
Some that have been mentioned I find pretty interesting:

Red Robin, yes, over priced in my opinion, but my opinion only counts for me, not others.
5 guys, way over priced, we were very disappointed in them.
Boston Market, Shoneys, Sizzler, TGI Fridays: all are losing stores, I doubt we see any of them expanding in the near future. gs
Taco Cabana: one fast food chain, we really love. And Chick fil A is good, but over priced.
Again, just my take. Oh to those who can't see the magic In&Out holds, it is 2 thiings; 1-price, no one is comparing them with a $7 burger, but for less than $2 they are the best and 2-the use nothing but fresh, home made ingredients. That is what makes them so special. I will take fresh over processed or frozen anyday.
