...Turns out it was "white" pizza (didn't notice that when I bought it),......
"White pizza" is a crime against nature - an aberration and an abomination. The fact that you were unaware of that makes you not culpable, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to a spiritual advisor.
Every white pizza I have had, maybe a dozen from 3 or 4 places, has had what seemed to be an olive oil/garlic "sauce", never Alfredo or anything like that.
Personally I am not a big fan, but if the ingredients are quality, it is fine food.
I'm not a big fan of white pizza, either, because I love tomato sauce, but some people don't like tomato sauce and some people can't eat it for health reasons (my own mom has kidney disease and tomatoes are a no-no for her).
HOWEVER there are always exceptions, and one of them is Trader Joe's frozen spinach and cheese pizza. Good for frozen and no tomato sauce.
My main thing with tomato sauce is that it lends an inherent touch of sweetness that I'm not a big fan of. I usually like sweet/savory combos, but it just doesn't work for me with pizza. I don't like the BBQ chicken pizza trend that came about in the CPK heyday, for the same reason.
When I make it, it can be more wet than dry, TBH. I have to watch to not use a heavy hand.
If anything it's more like garlic bread if you don't put alot on, it but I use a base and ricotta AND sauteed spinach and/or artichokes etc so it can't possibly BE dry.
Here's a recipe that explains it (although I add regular mozz cheese, too):
Did you ever buy regular pre-made pizza from the same place? Probably is not that great, either.
My general theory is to never assume something made take out in a grocery store represents the item very well. I can't stand anything from Whole Foods, for example. MAYBE on occasion I'll grab the steamed dumplings but use my own dip.
Your pizza was sitting there in shrink wrap for who knows how long so....

Dear OP, I'm sure there is something like a good white pizza out there, somewhere in the World. After experiencing one, our experiences were the same. Do I eat it, throw it out, or just eat the box? Maybe some people can't eat tomato sauce and they still want a good pizza. To me, it's like a person who desires pecan pie but is allergic to nuts.
Well, I love white pizza... but I do think it's a bit of a misnomer to call it 'pizza' since tomato sauce is so ubiquitous for pizzas. The name doesn't matter to me - what do I care what something is called, as long as it tastes good? - but the expectation created by the name trips some people up and leaves them disappointed.
