Ryan's #2101, 2426 Laurens Road, Greenville, South Carolina 29607-3814
Ryan's was decent until it was acquired by Buffets, Incorporated. After being acquired, Ryan's went downhill implementing external ideas. Unfortunately, this led to the closure of many successful and popular restaurant locations, and it is why Ryan's may not last beyond 2016.
The timing of the closure of Ryan's #2101 coinciding with passing of its founder Alvin McCall on Friday is concerning.
When my wife and I used to rent vacation homes in Spring Hill FL. a few years ago, there was a Ryan's Family Steak House near the junction of Mariner and Cortez, opposite the WalMart super centre.
We used it a couple of times, it was as good as most places of its type, maybe a shade better.
No idea if it's still there, or changed its name, or closed.
Once, on leaving Punta Gorda FL. after a vacation, we stopped for breakfast in a Golden Corral on 41 before heading to RSW airport for a flight home via Atlanta.
Big mistake, lousy service, mediocre food, redneck clientele who looked like the word shower meant a short period of rainfall to them.
Should have gone a little further toward 75, and hit Applebee's or Cracker Barrel.
both tend to do 'comfort' foods.. Ryan's is a hot-bar AYCE concept. Sometimes with carving stations for meats (Though I'd say those are going by the wayside if they're still there) along with a bakery bar.
While Picadilly is more the cafeteria concept.. You go in and they have a few entrees and sides available, you pick which you want and they portion out to you.
Food types that they have are similar, but that's about it.
If you're actually in Raleigh, the one there appears to have recently closed (Likely as part of the February closings), and is now a used car dealership.
Chick-Fil-A is the only chain I can think of that hasn't really dropped off as far as quality goes.
There's a reason behind that.. Has to do with their franchising model.. Read up on it sometime.. I don't think i'd ever sign up to own one based on the way they do things.. But.. Hey.. It obviously works for them.
Ryan's is a regional chain so if you haven't heard of it, you're not in one of their regions. I too remember when Ryan's was good. My parents took me to one in the 80's in an Atlanta suburb and really enjoyed. Later, I would eat at one in New Braunfels, TX and wonder what all the fuss was about.
In my younger, less health conscious, more high metabolism days I loved eating at all you can eat buffets. But my metabolism slowed, my blood pressure rose, and my drill sergeant like internist changed my paradigm. Now I go nowhere near them.
Still, it's always a shame to see a business go under.
