Catching a stomach bug. General nastiness. Yes, I eat in restaurants often and I've never had any problems. Maybe I'm already immune to the germs? I haven't vomited in over 20-25 years and I just want to keep my streak going.

The germs all over your phone at any given time probably pose a greater risk.

Eat away at salad bars, olive bars and snicker bars, they're all filled with disgusting things that are best not to think about, but our ancestors survived before Purell and are surviving in areas without our "highly" regulated food standards. Also, as someone else mentioned, you might want to build that immunity as our new President seems intend on appointing people to run departments that they have a vested interest in dismantling.

It's a brave new world, go to your grocery store and eat!

Ok, I'm eating it now. It was a mixture of olives, cheese, and salami but somehow I only managed to get olives and cheese and like one little piece of meat.

Well, perhaps there is no record of this having taken place at a grocery store, but the largest bio-terror attack in US history took place at several restaurant-based salad bars in--guess where?--the state of Oregon!

You don't have any recollection of this incident that sickened hundreds of people in your state?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_R...oterror_attack

Because it did actually happen at several Oregon restaurants, then--clearly--the potential exists for something like this to happen at any facility. Do I eat at salad bars? Yes, I do, but the potential still exists for contamination, and I essentially hope for the best.

Last week, at the soup bar at my local Whole Foods, there was a strange old man wearing a Deerstalker Cap, and I observed him ladling-out small quantities of Chicken Noodle Soup, and then picking pieces of chicken out of the ladle. I immediately changed my plan to have soup for lunch that day, although the extremely high temperature of their soup bar probably served to kill whatever microbes he had on his hands.

And--yes--the brine in which the olives are marinated is pretty much capable of destroying disease organisms, due to its composition of both vinegar and salt.

I don't buy at the salad bar, but I've seen them do it at the bulk bins. I only buy from the bulk bins that have dispensers. Otherwise I go to the back and buy full unopened bags.

I'm in Fresh Market almost every day and I've NEVER seen this. Kids usually aren't tall enough to reach the salad bar. Ditto for Whole Foods and Publix.

It's a lot more dangerous for us to avoid eating fruits and vegetables than for us to forego the salad bar

I just spray bug spray on it. Really improves the flavor too.
