Here is an interesting article about "actual" wattage of blenders.

The trick is to put the ice in first, and just use a little liquid until the ice is ground. If you use too much liquid, the ice floats out of reach of the blades.

But I use frozen fruit instead of ice.

When I used to make smoothies, I froze the fruit/vegetables instead of using ice cubes, while keeping the juice and yogurt refrigerated. I used a $30 hand blender. That gave me the same quality as Jamba Juice or other smoothie stores.

Not if you toss kale into the mix.

What’s wrong with a used blender? They can be cleaned, you know.

I'm not really familiar with the kale craze. Why would it affect the frozen ingredients?

If someone drinks green smoothies on a regular basis they need to rotate the greens. Kale is one of the top ones that is used...although it is not the best tasting one, lol. It is a bear for blenders to tear up and pulverize.
