The trick is to put the ice in first, and just use a little liquid until the ice is ground. If you use too much liquid, the ice floats out of reach of the blades.

I'm not really familiar with the kale craze. Why would it affect the frozen ingredients?
If someone drinks green smoothies on a regular basis they need to rotate the greens. Kale is one of the top ones that is used...although it is not the best tasting one, lol. It is a bear for blenders to tear up and pulverize.
