I've worked in the restaurant business for several years and we get guests who are adamant about making sure they are not served shellfish, or for that matter, anything containing peanuts even though they are ordering steak.
The allergic reaction to some foods can be deadly to some. They just want to make sure nothing contains anything remotely to whatever it is they are allergic to. In this case, the food company is simply playing CYA because of the over abundance of lawyers just waiting for that deadly allergic reaction.
Some people want others to think for them, they are lazy. Would be interesting to see what would happen if they would label chicken with, "may contain shellfish", or beef or pork. See if people would ask and believe the person or investigate it.
So tired of people believing the media rather than learning for themselves. Food, Inc. comes to mind.
But we all live around someone who is similar to Jessica Simpson. Bless their heart.......they make me feel so smart. Just a joke
I was at Sam's Club today, getting a ham for Christmas. I was brousing around and picked up a bag of frozen scallops. The warning on the bag said, "Contains shellfish." This made me laugh.
It just so happens that a "Food Sample Lady" (I don't know what their pc title is, but I have noticed online that they might make $15.00 and hour), was nearby and I said (feeling the need to explain why I was laughing with nobody else around) "this bag of scallops says, 'contains shellfish'". Her reply was, " It does? I didn't know that."
Lord, give me strength. I am sitting here by myself, and still laughing my head off.
I have to laugh and I don't know which is funnier, the packaging or the demo lady...?? This is sorta like a blood pressure med I am on, the warning says taking this, mixed with alcohol could inhibit driving. Last time I heard, too much alcohol shouldn't be mixed with anything and it isn't a good idea to drink and drive...

you are right, but there is such a thing as common sense, not to mention, the demo gal not knowing anything about the product..that is even scarier...
Some people are actually paid more than they deserve...
I thought this was interesting, that, if it's true, they make more than I have ever made per hour, yet they don't even need to know anything about food.
