This sounds like an absolutely delicious solution to the Op's quest for eggnog. Yum!
Except that's way too much work and trouble; I don't cook. Also, it would be disastrous to my weight to have eggnog "anytime I want it." Limiting it to the holidays makes it more special, but the holidays INCLUDE New Years.. Next year I'll know to buy two half gallons.
That is very similar to the recipe we found in my grandmother's handwriting. (She lived in southern WV from 1888-1973.) My brother and I have been making it for Christmas for the past 40 years. We had to dispense with the double boiler because we increased the recipe to start with 2 gallons of milk.
Which do you fancy for the holidays? I went to buy my favorite - eggnog - figuring they'd have it out for NYE, but it's all gone... Only boiled custard remains, which I've never tried before. If I like one, will I like the other?
