Except that's way too much work and trouble; I don't cook. Also, it would be disastrous to my weight to have eggnog "anytime I want it." Limiting it to the holidays makes it more special, but the holidays INCLUDE New Years.. Next year I'll know to buy two half gallons.

boiled custard never heard of it or saw it in any stores by me. egg nog I love but it's rich so a small glass is enough for me.

That is very similar to the recipe we found in my grandmother's handwriting. (She lived in southern WV from 1888-1973.) My brother and I have been making it for Christmas for the past 40 years. We had to dispense with the double boiler because we increased the recipe to start with 2 gallons of milk.
