I have been leaving 10%, but I'm wondering if this is acceptable? My reasoning is that there is not much waiting on me being done. I call in my order normally, and I walk inside to pick it up. Since I know there was a little work of putting it together for me, that is why I do tip. However, if I were sitting down at a table, dirtying plates and silverware, asking for drink refills, etc, I would be tipping 20-25% since I am creating more work. What do you guys do?
The majority of people don't tip on take out orders and it's okay. I worked in restaurants for over 30 years and tips on take out orders was never expected, but greatly appreciated when it did happen. The saving grace for me was that I didn't have to count to go sales as part of my tip report just BECAUSE most people don't tip on them.
I don't know why people think that servers "do nothing" for take out orders. It depends on the restaurant I guess and, yes, the cooks do all the cooking and boxing but the server is the one who makes sure all the condiments, napkins, plastic ware, drinks, etc. etc. are done right. It DOES take time to do those things and takes servers away from their assigned stations.
Another place people don't tip much are the buffet restaurants. The servers "do nothing", or so I hear. Actually they do all the same things as a regular place except take the order and deliver it. Some places, like Sizzler, DO have food delivered by a server. Otherwise they are still required to refill drinks, make sure people have everything they need and do the clean up afterwards. And yet people don't want to tip them.
I don't tip on to-go orders. I know this pisses some people off, but that's life. The folks in fast food bag my meal up, and ring it up, as well, and I don't tip them, either.
To-go orders are a 0% tip from me. I'd never even consider tipping in a situation like that. I bought the food and service (them putting the food in a bag and handing it to me) so why pay more? The workers are underpaid? I feel for them, but that's their owner/CEO's problem, not mine.
What about when the restaurant offers "carside" service, where they have someone bring out your "to go" order to a designated parking spot. Should they be tipped or not, as a general rule?
I would be tipping 20-25% since I am creating more work. What do you guys do?
I would never tip for "creating more work." I presume that a restaurant sets their prices to be profitable for the services that they provide. I do tip servers for good service. The better the service, the more I tip. I do not tip for takeout.
$0. Tip for what? That's like tipping for fast food or the Starbucks barista (hope I don't get flamed for the second half of my comment).
