Another place people don't tip much are the buffet restaurants. The servers "do nothing", or so I hear. Actually they do all the same things as a regular place except take the order and deliver it. Some places, like Sizzler, DO have food delivered by a server. Otherwise they are still required to refill drinks, make sure people have everything they need and do the clean up afterwards. And yet people don't want to tip them.
I'll tip at a buffet if the staff takes empty plates when I go back for more and keep my drink glass full. Otherwise nada...FWIIW, I rarely eat at buffets. I want to be served.
What about when the restaurant offers "carside" service, where they have someone bring out your "to go" order to a designated parking spot. Should they be tipped or not, as a general rule?
Agree; what about this? They take the order (usually "with or without" or "on the side" instructions), go pick it up, assemble it, watch for my car, bring it out, take my card, go back and ring it up, come back out again and wait for me to sign. I usually get a $30 ballpark order and leave 10%. If I go there regularly, I want to make sure they don't do something to my food -- you never know.
If there's a tip jar on the counter I will leave the change and a dollar. If we're at a buffet we leave five dollars. If it's a sit down restaurant we tip twenty percent.
If someone's getting paid enough that they think $5 is "spare change" then I guess they don't need my tip!
I generally put in the change if I buy something at Subway, etc. But I admit that if I get take out from a real restaurant, I'm usually paying with plastic and I don't typically tip at all, and this thread has been enlightening. I still think a minimal tip is appropriate but I will make the point to tip a couple of bucks.
Buffet - if I ate them, I'd tip but I don't. Closest would be a salad bar portion of a meal but I tip the usual amount on that anyway.
No tip for takeout except for one busy sandwich shop I visit frequently. A couple of bucks then.
I do tip the buffet people who keep my iced tea glass filled.
I do too because you're actually getting served. If the person takes away your plates and refills the tea, they deserve 10%, IMO. If they don't do anything but bring your food, i.e. a to-go order, they shouldn't be tipped.
One of the three. But if I do I make like Costanza and make sure they see me putting it (money, not my penis) in the jar
