Growing up, we had salad with the rest of the meal. Somewhere along in my 60+ years, I transitioned to having it before the entree. If it's just my husband and me, we put it on the table at the same time, but we both eat the salad first.
Back in Oklahoma we had friends who did it both ways...and one German couple who served the salad after the main course. We moved to Washington a few years ago and have three couples that we trade sit-down dinners with. All three serve the salad with the rest of the meal. One of them even commented that I'm the only one she knows who actually serves salad as a separate course, before the entree.
I prefer my salad after the entree .. it seems to lesson any feeling of fullness.
I feel it helps with my digestion. .. could be the greens ... may be the acids ??
Ah, shirt! I've really got to start reading the OP before I vote on these polls...
Usually I eat salads at restaurants, so I typically eat salads before the main course or as the dinner, ie. when it's served. If I'm making a salad at home as a dish I'll eat it with/during the dinner.
