Neither my husband nor I "need" dessert. We're both constantly trying to lose weight. I only have five pounds to lose, but it's hanging on pretty tight to my belly. I have blood sugar "issues", my parents were both diabetic, he has celiac disease so can't eat anything with flour in it anyway, so...for all these reasons "dessert" for me consists of a single piece of sugar free candy after I eat lunch and dinner. I also work in an office where there are treats sitting around constantly. It's very hard to resist.
I did bake him a gluten free chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for his birthday that was absolutely fabulous. I'm talking eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head delicious. We each had a piece every night after dinner for a week. I think I put on five pounds. He gained nothing. His weight is controlled by his thyroid medication.
We rarely have desserts as we don't have a sweet tooth overall. We typically make dessert about twice a month. It will be brownies, oreo cookie pie or angel food cake. The 'heaviest' dessert would probably be rice pudding or flan.
We rarely eat desserts of any kind other than ice cream sometimes, but I did just have a piece of carrot cake for lunch. Our granddaughter insisted on bringing dessert for moms day and knows a few desserts I do like are carrot cake and cheese cake. She baked a carrot cake, so I decided to have the last piece. Other than that I don't think I have had a rich dessert in a year. I don't even usually have a piece of pie or cake at Christmas. Spoiled brat is more inclined to indulge.
I don't consider every cake, cookie, or ice cream to be "heavy." I have dessert on a regular basis. I just took a couple of chocolate cakes out of the oven.

Constant dieting sucks.
My husband never gets fat...and he definitely eats like a fat person. He will put on 5 or 10 pounds, then lose it as such as soon as he goes outside to cut the grass. No joke. That man has the fastest metabolism ever.
Eating dessert wasn't something that we ever did regularly growing up. These days I'm probably more likely to go for something sweet after dinner every now and then, but not very often.
