It has some rust on the bottom but it says it runs good.

Make sure you get it inspected by an automotive repair shop before purchasing even if it costs you another hundred. They will also likely tell you of any upcoming repairs that you can plan into your savings.

Make sure it has a "clear" title. Sometimes people will sell really low simply because the title is messed up (divorce, liens, etc.) or it may be a rebuilder's (salvage) title.

Dose it run? Dose it stop? Dose it have a title? If if breaks can you fix it your self?

If the answer to those questions is yes, the buy it. If the answer is no, don't buy it

Thats far from "some rust". The entire rocker pannel is gone and it looks like its going up and over the dog leg.

Even for $500 I would avoid something with that much rust. Chances are there are some critical suspension parts, brake lines, subframes, etc that arent far behind in the rust department. You will see a major failure of parts very quickly with that car.

If you're wanting an extremely cheap "beater with a heater" to get you to work and back, until the car dies, fine. It might be good for that.

Nothing else.

How long might the car last?

This is an unanswerable question unless you're looking for responses like "It might last a day or it might last ten years." Overall time will vary based on the condition of the vehicle (including hidden wear/damage), your driving style, maintenance intervals and luck.

If you absolutely require reliable and dependable transportation for work, school, etc then this is probably not it. This is the kind of car you buy with the understanding that it may crap out on you with alternate plans made well in advance. I almost said may crap out unexpectedly but then I had to back track because that would be wrong as I would definitely expect it.

Make sure there is no rust around the part of the body that connects to major suspension components like control arms and struts.

I would forget it. They don't say how many miles are on it, whether automatic or stick, and only show 2 pictures. You can bet that the other side and rear are worse than what the pictures show, and that rust on the side is bordering on unsafe/fall apart. I have a 1997 with 165,000 miles running strong but it has zero rust. I paid $900 for it two years ago.
