Hello all. I lived in S.Florida from 19yo to 23 and really enjoyed it but moved back because of my friends and now wife(I'm 38yo.... No kids). My really like it too and we come down or cacao every year then go see my parents in Tampa. I make $115k per year and don't see how the cheaper cost of living down their offsets the drastic cut in salary I would make. My job(estimator) pays about 60k down there.

Lol..sorry. Don't see how the cheaper cost of living(doesnt seem much cheaper) can offset the much cheaper salaries. What's your opinion?

I guess it depends on where you are coming from and where you end up living, but for me, this is not a cheaper cost of living. Home prices are more, insurance is more, food costs more and entertainment costs more.

So, for my move, it was NOT a cheaper cost of living at all. Therefore there was no way we could have moved here making less salary. It's only been a few months for us, so I can't say how much our cost of living has gone up exactly, but home price alone is a HUGE slap in the face for us!

WHY? S Fl is Ghetto. I grew up here and been here since 1968. It's changed over time taking the downward slide. If you believe it's not , well I guess we have been told crap is now great. Sad that so many believe it.

SoFL (even some FTL suburb) has a relatively high cost of living, especially compared to the current avg. income you get from jobs down here - and there aren't many, and most pay properly low. In the OP's case I would not consider SoFL most probably, simply not worthy. Don't get me wrong, it has several nice places to live, it isn't that expensive (when compared to some cities), overall pretty reasonable and safe (that said, avoiding most of Miami-Dade - which is more expensive and generally unsafer, not to mention stress and traffic).

If you make 60k a year in Miami you are better off where you are. You won't survive very long here. Rent and gas will eat most of your salary.

I'd stay put. From your amount of salary and position I'd assume you probably enjoy living comfortably at the very least and 60,000 a year in S FL is nothing especially with a wife and even less if you plan on having kids. I moved from Broward in 2011 because the cost of living was so high e.g. I was paying $1000 a month rent for a 2br/2bath villa in a so so neighborhood with D schools surrounded by ghetto (North Lauderdale). Not fun. Not to mention its very hard to find any company there that will provide a decent insurance package let aone 401k, etc.
