Hello everyone! Moving to fort Wayne soon and don't have a car so I'm wondering how good the public transportation in the city is.

not the best....they don't run on Sunday and the route pickup times can be an hour or so apart.

Lousy for the 2nd largest city in the state. I was there for a year in 2019 till May 2020. Forget the fact they don't run Sundays or after 6pm on Saturdays, or most routes only run hourly during the week. At the start of the pandemic they stopped bus service at 4pm. Sad because the connections the the transfer center downtown are usually good as they will hold buses for you if yours is running real late. https://www.fwcitilink.com/

Well, from what I can tell you, if Indianapolis, the 15th largest city in the country has a lousy public transportation system, you can bet Fort Wayne's is even worse because they are in the same state. I mean you can still use it, but you would probably be very disappointed.

Indianapolis is closer to the 30th largest city in the country. City populations are very arbitrary. If you go by city population then Indianapolis is more populous than Boston, Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Seattle.

I've never taken a bus in Fort Wayne, but I can confidently say the conditions of IndyGo have nothing to do with FW buses.

I doubt the public bus service is very good in any Indiana city or town with the possible exceptions of NWI, Bloomington and West Lafayette. Adequate at best I am guessing. 24 hour public trasportation is mostly an East and West Coast thing and still pretty much a mystery thru out most of the Midwest and the South.

What do you mean it is closer to the 30th largest city? Where are you getting your data from?

Indianapolis is 33rd in metro population. I just finished explaining why city population is not an accurate way to compare cities.

Even in Northwest Indiana, the bus service is pretty limited. Only Gary, Michigan City, East Chicago, and Michigan City have local bus systems now. Hammond used to have its own, but was eliminated(due to claims of lack of funding I think) back in I think 2012? Although after Hammond eliminated their bus system, GPTC(which operates the buses in Gary, Merrillville, etc) created a few new bus routes running west to Hammond and Griffith.

I'm not sure if I'd try catching buses in NWI unless you ONLY were doing errands in the daytime, and you had Uber and/or Lyft downloaded to your phone and ready to use, if the wait for a bus took longer than normal. And of course before you ride, to make sure you had the bus schedules downloaded to your phone(or print out the schedules and put them into your pocket, your choice), before riding.

Also IIRC, none of these NWI bus systems run on Sundays or holidays. I remember Transpo(the bus system for South Bend and Mishawaka) and Interurban Trolley for Elkhart and Goshen, with one route that connects to Transpo in Mishawaka) also are Monday-Saturday bus systems only, with no Sunday service.

I hadn't yet looked up the local bus route system, in Fort Wayne for myself. But I wouldn't be surprised if the one in Fort Wayne was like Transpo and Interurban Trolley, in that those 2 bus systems only run Monday-Saturday. I intend to look this up for myself later today, how frequently the buses in Fort Wayne run. Now that I'm curious, thanks to this thread!
