Hi,

I'm considering buying my first home. I really don't know where I want to buy a home, but I'm strongly leaning toward Keller. Does anyone have any knowledge of Newport or Diamond R?? I have read horror stories on this board of people getting involved with the wrong builders, and I want to avoid any problems if possible. Any comments or feedback is welcome.

get a local realtor familiar with the areas you are interested in and the price range you are shopping in
some realtors don't know anything about entry-level homes

get some professional advice--
go out and check homes under construction and do some investigation of how a well-built home looks

check out GardenWeb build a home site
good info there
the cheapest home is often now the best home--nor is the one with the flashiest kitchen--
good homes start from the ground up-and what goes inside the building envelop is as much or more important as the finish materials

Default Builder Research Methods

There are many ways to check on a homebuilder in Texas, including BBB, rip off report dot com, complaint board dot com, etc. Perhaps the easiest way is simply to internet search the name of the company, and look for good or bad reviews.

Here in Texas, we builders aren't licensed, we aren't tested, and we aren't much policed by government at all, so it's a good idea to be careful before handing over money.

Many people who are of basically good character have done things lately that they wouldn't do in better economic times. [mod] not allowed [/mod]

That is just a blanket opinion that tars too many builders with no proof offered--
there were plenty of builders who were building problem homes when times were good--
I know people who bought them and found out later about the problems--
there are some builders who moved from residential homes to commercial to avoid having to cut corners so much
speak for yourself--if you are a builder--not for others...

Go to the BBB. Any complaint on a company is a bad sign. The best predicter of future behavior is to look at their past.
Be careful
