Doing a weekend trip from Arlington up 287. What interesting stops,
restaurants, etc. along the way? Other than Amarillo
Love the small towns, but would rather have recommendations about places to eat.
Thanks!

You'll get to Palo Duro Canyon before you get to Amarillo. There isn't a lot between here and there other than miles and miles of Texas. But I rather like the drive.

On the way to or from we'll go up to 40 & stop in Amarillo. Might just have to just be on the lookout but I love small (good food) family restaurants.

That is going to be a LONG drive for a day trip! You realize it is 5 hours each way, right? And it is a BORING drive. The land up there is very flat and there really is nothing to see along the way.

Personally, I would stay overnight and see the musical Texas! Texas Show The show is done every evening during the summer.

We're use to long day drives (company gas, but can't afford the hotel, lol). We're playing it by ear, if we spend the night in Amarillo. Have wanted to see the canyon & this is a good weekend off for us.

Do you know of any restaurants along the way?

I think I read the Texas play doesn't start til May

Sweetie Pie's Ribeyes in Decatur is good. I spent a weekend in Wichita Falls and the best thing I found there was Cracker Barrel... You do know that the area you'd be driving through (US 287) is where all of the big fires are, right? This could seriously affect your travel time. If you go through Oklahoma City on I-40, your drive increases to *8* hours EACH WAY. It might be best to postpone the trip...

Texas show is June 4 to Aug 20.

yes--despite the weather helping when there was some rain I think there is still possibility for fires--

you should check the TX public safety site and see about road closings/danger zones

Turn back! Turn back!

I grew up in that neck of the woods, and there is NOTHING there!

Seriously, that is NOT a day trip! And if you really want to go, please do it during "Texas." It is great. But you have got to spend the night. And the hotels/motels on 287 book up fast in the summer with all the travelers to Colorado. Trust me on that.

There is one local type restaurant that I'm aware of, it's in Quanah/Medicine Mound, and it's an old train car. It might not even be open anymore. But it is kind of what you're looking for, I think.

If you take the back way (TX-199 through Jacksboro to TX-114W) there is a "legendary" burger joint in Jacksboro called Herd's. It has been in business since the '30s or '40s. They are closed on Sunday, so make sure you stop on the way there...

Herd's is GREAT! The legendary Green Frog Cafe, also in Jacksboro, has sadly gone way downhill.

The OP could just drive up to Jacksboro for a Herd burger, turn around and go home, and he/she would be satisfied, IMO! No need to drive all the way up 287.
