Awesome! Good idea for us when we go to replace the boring tile in the family room.

Real wood is very costly, and laminate cannot be mopped. I had laminate in my last home, and I had to use a combination of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Had to get down on the floor and lightly mist a small area of the floor then immediately buff it up with clean wash clothes. It was A LOT of work since I had to do it weekly due to having an indoor dog.

Personally, I recommend you put down vinyl. I replaced all of the carpet in my current residence with vinyl planking that simulates wood. It looks nice and easily kept very clean. I sweep and vacuum daily because of the dog hair, and I mop a couple of times a month only since I do not wear street shoes inside my home. If you have allergies, as do I, this is also another great reason to buy vinyl. I have never like any kind of carpet. Carpet is a dirty way to live IMHO. I much prefer something that can be properly cleaned on a regular basis.

Has anyone used Costco for carpet?
From the website they only deal in Shaw carpeting/flooring products which is reputable mfg but haven't gone into stores to look at any carpeting yet

Also would you buy same style of carpet (level-loop Berber) - just to have continuity w/upstairs? I don't mind it--but know other styles more popular now. We just don't use upstairs enough to make replacement there a smart money decision...it's in much better shape. Downstairs has stains that won't come out...think original owners didn't buy very good quality when they installed.

Any recommendations for carpet stores?
I know Lowes has some good prices but installers are the question there...
My husband really doesn't want to upgrade to wood flooring even though this might be good chance.
I know wood flooring is very desireable if you go to sell.
Personally, laminate seems too problamatic to me.
I've used 2 places in the DFW for flooring and would highly recommend both. The first one (Jerry's Carpet in Midlothian with local phone #) was the recommendation of 3 people 30 years ago. They used a great crew, got the carpet I wanted at half the price of anyone and are still highly recommended. They did wood flooring and carpet for me.

The second one is more recent - I needed to match my current wood floor or remove it due to remodeling my kitchen/den/breakfast area. I found a highly recommended place in Dallas called The Floor Man - been in business for about 15 years with locations in Tarrant & Dallas county. I worked with Brian from Southlake, who really knew his stuff. They do installations of all flooring and restoration work. These people were GREAT. On time for everything, zero pressure and an estimate that allowed us to pick what we wanted to do, and what we wanted them to do. They sent us to a Wholesaler that had huge inventory, but they will lay flooring from any outlet you choose.

It's difficult to compare Big Box stores (Home Depot, Lowes, Costco) to other outlets because they carry products made especially for them. Dealing with the main wholesaler for most of the carpet/flooring in the area allows for an easier comparison and (IMO) a better value.

We have vinyl plank flooring at our FL house and I do like it--
