The Blue line north of downtown runs alongside freight tracks. One time I walked on those very tracks for a couple of blocks just north of Abrams a few years before DART rail came about. DART built two new tracks next to the freight tracks because the right of way is there.

the statement about using "abandoned" right of way is misleading--you are equating Dallas and Tarrant county rail lines -- FTW has only 1 public rail line--the TRE--all other rail lines are commercial not public transport

Hopefully the T's new SW to NE rail line will be completed on schedule and in a few years public transportation to and from DFW Airport will be much improved. I know I can't wait to be able to walk to the station near my house and get to the airport easily, with the added bonus of no parking fees!

it just depends on if this is more than lip service to get the 'bama money...
people will have to use that feature and for us
if there is no train station close to us--we are still driving to DFW--and right now there is no station close enough to make it worthwhile--same reason my husband does not use TRE into Sundance--he would be halfway to downtown before he got to the parking lot for the train...
more hassle than help...
they should have taken over the defunct North Hills Mall for a depot and added a light rail to 121/183 into downtown

Uninformed response. This has been in the works for years and has nothing to do with your dislike of the President.

this is like the health care reform. A lot of people who supported it changed their mind when learning that their tax will go up. Many people simply can't suffer a bit for the greater good. unfortunate. I don't know how much sales tax or gas tax people can support. I, for one, support rail. Rail doesn't come for free. Gotta give something.

yes--this has been in DISCUSSION for years--some cities have voted the tax themselves for it in anticipation and some have not...
cities will usually take ANY funding that relieves tax burden on their immediate locations--
the fact that it comes via another taxation authority just keeps their hands clean...

and I don't dislike Obama--I voted for him--but to think that there is not lobbying to get their share of the "green shoots" funds is just naive

Again, the plan has always been to request federal funding for a portion of the SW to NE rail line. I don't think there's anything wrong with applying for federal funds in this situation just because more have been made available due to various economic stimulus plans. Hopefully, either way, in a few years we have a new transportation option that will make DFW more liveable and convenient for a lot of people. Also, the T is currently in the process of acquiring land for the stations.

yes--think T and Dart have come to a mutual advantageous decision about the track---
I am all for doing it
I just mean that it is always easier to use federal money vs local tax money--most people don't understand that both come out of their pockets at some time or another...
