I was there in the early 1990s; they were pretty new then. But maybe not the same place; now that I think of it some more I think I was at Crystal Park, not Crystal Spring.

I wouldn't say Hagerstown is less safe. There is quite a bit of crime in Frederick these days.

Where do you recommend in hagerstown and frederick? I think it would be awesome to live in the heart of frederick but with that comes crime

I meant Crystal Park. I used to live on a Crystal Springs road and I confuse the two sometimes.

I recommend the north side of Frederick, near Walkersville, still close to downtown out there.

If you've lived in DC or Bawlmer crime is lower. Most of the trouble I've read about in downtown Frederick is along West All Saints and West South Streets. When you get on the numbered streets you do better. I've had long-term residents tell me it's gotten WAY better since then.

The stuff south of US 40 (Golden Mile) is also not so great either -- not awful by SE DC or West Bawlmer standards but on your income (and presumably hers) you can do better.

If your wife works in the medical field, there's more hospitals within an hour's commute of Frederick than Hagerstown (east on 70, south on 270, or even south on 340/15). FWIW, if she gets a job in VA, the commute is easier "living in VA-working in MD" than the reverse.

Good luck, Frederick is an awesome place.

Hagerstown is much cheaper and is also family oriented. I've never rented in MD, so I can't give specifics, but many people prefer to live there over Frederick due to the lower cost of housing. Surrounding towns (of either Frederick or Hagerstown) will probably be less expensive as well, but you will need to come into town for almost everything.

I did see that your original post says you want to be close to major cities. Depending on what you consider "close", you might be disappointed. I don't consider Frederick to be near any major city, unless you count being able to get their TV channels.

Within an hour is close enough. I would like to live in the town of frederick or even hagerstown.

According to MapQuest: Frederick Wegman's to Baltimore (Inner Harbor) = 1 hour. Wegman's to DC (Georgetown) = 1 hour, 12 minutes.

So you should be ok in Frederick (outside of rush hour).
