What about herbs and spices that are past the stamped use by? Good to use, or ditch 'em? Some spices are pretty expensive...

As long as spices are kept airtight in a dark cool place, they last a long time.

Don't store them above or near the stove!

Herbs and spices are useful only because they bring along aromatic essenses, which dissipate over time, even in a tightly sealed container. When the essence is depleted, the herb is nothing but grass and leaves.

Herbs and spices begin to lose their useful essence on day one. The longer you wait, the more you have to use in order to deliver the same effect to your dish.

^^ Totally agree, but depends on the type of spice, you can keep it for long time. Spices made of seeds keep for very long time and they don't lose their abilities, while the ones made from dried leaves tend lose the flavor after short time. I hardly use dried leaves and when I have to use some, I ask my neighbor

The thing to really be careful with is tylenol, or anything with acetominophin in it. It should have a shelf life of 3-5 years, but since you don't know how or when it was packaged, I wouldn't go beyond a year. Old tylenol can ruin your kidneys and liver, and there's no telltake signs of age, it all looks and smells the same. I wouldn't trust any tylenol product beyone 1 year.

Asprin will turn and smell funny, like vinegar, if too old, but tylenol doesn't.

Smell them..taste them.
Most you will notice is they may be a lot weaker than fresher ones and/or not taste at all or not like they should.
I won't dare tell you how old some of the ones I use are.

stilltasty.com

Site informs how long any food product is good for...whether opened or not. I will use some foods past date but I also remember food quality diminishes...same with meds.
