I know when I was visitng out of state relatives last year, they had (have) Magic Jack. They like it, only downside is if power goes out. But they like it.
I have Magic Jack and I like it but I don't like the fact that I have to have my computer turned on all the time. I just ordered the VoIP kit and hope it will be better. I like the idea of not paying any more than the cost of the kit, hope it will last. I want to cancel my cell phone and I think having this will help me make this decision.
We use Skype, and pay very little for Skype-In and Skype-Out. No landline. We do have pay-as-you-go Virgin cellphone, though.
Only downside to having no landline is that Skype doesn't do 911, and on a cellphone your call may get sent to the highway patrol instead of your local police dispatcher.
On My Cell Phone I put the 10 digit number for 911 in, I've gone Cell Only, and the cell tower my phone hit @ home is in the next county. So my calls (if i dial 911) would by default go to that 911 center. So for 911 calls I need to make I use the pre-programed 10 digit number for my 911 center, so I get to the correct 911 center to start with. (But the 10 digit number get answered after the 911 calls/Transfers from other centers). So if its life or death I would mostly likey call 911 and have them forward me over, (Also calling 911 send the GPS infro from my phone to the 911 center) calling the 10 digit number does not do that.
Guess I'm lucky. I set my computer that runs the MJ to never power off. That little computer also runs some other network stuff and it is my link to my external hard drives. My MJ calls have been clear in both directions and it's worked well with GV. I really have no complaints about the MJ service so far.
The reason you have to keep your computer ON for majic jack is when you signed up, you gave them permission to install a progarm on your computer that copies all your web site traffic, emails, and documents. When you make a call or their software does a "upgrade", it's sending that copied info back to their office. You also gave them permission to listen in on your calls to determine sales opprtunites of products. They use this to build profiles and sell that to other vendors for a host of reasons. Majic Jack is the ultimate in anti-privacy telecommunications. The sad thing is they get around the wiretap and eavesdropping laws because you actually gave permission for them to do this. Sadly most don'tt read the full TOS.
I am thinking of getting rid of my land line to save $50 a month (I am living paycheck to paycheck right now). My DSL meets the speed requirements. I hardly ever talk on the phone, anyways.
I have read mixed reviews of it.
You have a cell phone right?
You are spending $600 a year on home phone. You could be putting that money into retirement Roth IRA account.

If I choose to leave the computer off at night (I just don't think it's good for it to run 24/7), then do I have to go through the registration process, etc, evertime I go back on?
Texas User, I agree .....it's a lot of money for something I hardly even use. And I may get Consumer Cellular and get rid of my cel service. CC is only $10 a month and I never use that, either (just like to have it if the car breaks down). My current cel bill is around $40.
I bought MJ, but couldn't get it to "register" on my computer and I have high speed internet. When we move (soon) I'll try it again and see if it will work. I've got a new computer now.
Thanks for the "google voice" note, I've never tried it, but will now.

Interesting....I have DSL, but it's not the highest speed. I think MJ requires 128 kbps and I get 322, but if yours didn't work mine might not...
