(whisper: Cable modem. Where are the TV cables, there are modems)

So you don't need to launch a satellite for your connections.

Broadband via Comcast/Xfinity.

I don't "do" DSL.

Yes, it is expensive, but I refuse to compromise on speed and reliability so I keep costs low elsewhere.

You are not going to steam NetFlix @ 3Mbps You need a minimum of @ 10-12.

My download DSL is very slow because of where I live, yet I can stream NetFlix and Amazon Prime quite well at only 1.33 Mbps.

So I say, one Can stream @3 Mbps.

Sometimes certain commercials are a bit choppy, which is an annoyance, but basic Hulu or the odd news videos which have commercials don't do very well. Otherwise, the DSL chugs along OK. I have to go with what is available.

flyonpa, I think part of it is what we get used to having, and anything lower in speeds seems impossible to bear.

I think my cost of Internet is going to be just about $70 a month. Here on LI we have limited options and Optimum is $59.95 plus $4.95 to upgrade to 50mbps rather than 25. So with taxes I would say $70. How can one lower that? Are there other options? Hey, to not pay $150 for a package of landline, cable and Internet, I think $70 plus digital antenna and Netflix is a pretty good deal. Maybe even a pre paid cell phone as a house phone. $100 a month for all that. Not bad.

I'd be open to paying for EarthLink but it's not many Mbps and only plays SD and not HD Netflix. $25 cheaper than Optimum.

Some folks have needs which do not match yours.

Time Warner internet $58.70 per month. No landline in this millennium. Had to Google DSL. Never heard of it before.

$70 is not bad at all.

You don't need a prepaid cell phone as a house phone, you and your spouse probably have cell phones already, so just use those. You don't need a house phone at all if you each have your own cell phone.

This is the digital antenna I have: Terk : Indoor Antennas : LOGTVA It's ugly but it doesn't get static when someone walks in front of it. I've got it stuck in a fake potted plant and it doesn't show at all. The picture is actually clearer than it is with cable, one of my neighbors used to want to come over and watch her novellas at my house because the picture was so much better with the antenna.
