This is probably a no-brainer but I've noticed that generic store brands are always less money than the name brand, even if you have a coupon for the name brand item. However, does anyone think specific name brands are better value or quality than certain generic items, and which ones?
Give me the non name brand nine times out of ten. Off the top of my head, the only name brands that i choose over the generic are my condiments and chicken wings.
I'll buy generic if the quality is as good as the name brand. I don't buy generic dryer sheets, dishwasher detergent, q-tips, contact lens solution or potato chips. And recently I've had to buy some name brand medications because the generics have different inactive ingredients and I'm often allergic to them.
I will buy a generic if the quality is as good as the name brand. I have tried generic dish liquid, toilet paper, and bleach I thought the quality was awful and won't buy again. I do buy generic OTC drugs, some laundry detergent (All, ERA), milk, pasta I can't tell any difference in those products.
I generally have pretty good luck with the premium store brands like Archer Farms (Target), Greenwise (Publix), or Whole Foods 365 for food items. I'm very national bran loyal for cleaning and personal care products though, save for my soap splurge- Whole Foods has some very nice 'natural' private label soaps for generally less than $2 a bar.
Since I go through it like candy when pine pollen and anything else is blooming (and in Florida, that's most of the year) I'm all about the generic version of Claritin that's a fraction of the price of the name brand when bought from a big box store.

sometimes the generic is equal or better. sometimes it is slighter worse but not enough to matter. sometimes it is much worse. i find that i can often guess before even trying if the generic would be much worse. the more complicated a product, the more likely it will be worse.
You just have to shop around your area and find the brands that work for you. I love Kroger store brand. Walmart store brand was good for a long time, but then they dropped the quality and raised the price so it was higher than some name brands. I haven't been back. Target has good stuff and so does Costco. I don't shop a lot of Sam's Club so not as sure there although it usually has better stuff than Walmart. We have a local grocery store that has good store brands.
I find generic products just as good as name-brand items about 80% of the time.
I buy generic as often as possible. I don't bother with coupons most of the time since they are generally centered out name brand items and are a hassle unless you are saving a lot of money.
The only food item I can think of where generic is not quite is good is Club crackers (butter flavored). Keebler or Ritz is generally better than its generic counterpart(s).
