My best tip for frugal living is to learn to enjoy taking long walks. It's not only good for your wallet, it's good for your health, and it improves your community (crime goes down in neighborhoods where people walk).
Many people don't think of walking as a form of entertainment, but you'd be surprised how fun it can be. You may think you don't live in an interesting neighborhood, but I challenge you to take a second look. Your neighborhood may be more interesting than you think. Or walk with a friend and practice telling jokes while you walk.
You're absolutely right, Normie. Especially about the teaming up with a friend (or spouse!) to take a walk. There are a couple of women in our neighborhood that walk together EVERY day (well, probably not in the rain). They talk constantly, I love passing them on the path because they always seem to be having a lively conversation.
My husband and I walk a least 3 times a week for an hour. I personally think it's refreshing and it gives us a chance to just be together and not worry about anything else.
I don't walk as much as I should...but I do enjoy it...another thing that happens when I do get out there and take a walk is I find wild berries, nuts etc - I live in the woods....
Great suggestion--costs nothing, feels good, and is good for us--walks are a winning combination. I love walking at dusk with DH and our dog 'to walk the sun down.' Watching the sky change colors and hear the birds start their evening serenade is a nice way to end the day...
During the past year I've upped my daily minimum from 3 miles a day to 5 miles a day. Been walking at least 5 miles a day rain or shine, hot or cold...no excuses accepted! Walking has been a favorite activity of mine for most of my life. I live just .5 miles from a BLM trailhead, so I do much of my walking on the nearby trails. When muddy, I walk thru local neighborhoods or along the paved riverfront trail which is just .75 mile from my front door. The only expenses involved is for hiking boots, rain gear, etc. I probably spend the equivalent of a buck a day for those items, many of which are optional purchases that I really don't have to have. At 5 miles a day the wear and tear on the feet add up. Gotta have a good pair of hiking shoes. I get sore feet when I wear the cheap crap. I buy some of the extras anyway because they increase my comfort and my level of enjoyment.
I don't belong to a gym. I walk, run, and lift weights at home. Great way to save bucks.
