I think the only way to grow poppies is to let their seeds fall wherever -- or collect and sow them as soon as they're ripe. The thing about self sowers is that they need exposure to the elements in order to germinate. They need cold stratification. Imagine how foolish I felt when I realized all that bagging, labelling and sticking in the dridge all winter was just a lot of work that Mother Nature would do if I just left well enough alone! I now sow seeds as they mature. They will come up when it's their time.
