I have been having a problem with fine hairy roots (reddish brown) that are choking out my flowers. I first noticed them in my compost pile. I told some men to pull the out of the compost when they moved the soil to my flower bed. Yhey didn't do it. Now these roots are taking over the soil and choking the flowers. Any ideas as to what this is and how can I get rid of it?

Are you sure this is not a mold or fungus that was growing in the compost?

Looks like hairy roots to me. When we pull them out, things grow fine. Very tedious job.

No, it grows under the soil. It can get really matted too.

It sounds like to me you have a tree near by. All you can do is keep cutting them out. You can't blame them really, they're just taking advantage of a really good thing.

They almost sound like pines roots. I had some masses of fine & thick orange roots once, but that was my fruitless Mulberry.

It is really strange. There are no trees around the compost where it originated. A tree guy told me a few years ago that he had heard of it, but couldn't remember the name or how to kill it. I have resorted to silk flower bushes.

I think the previous poster meant that you may have a tree nearby NOW that is trying to infiltrate into your nicely prepared, highly nutritious flower bed! You didn't add any mushroom compost to your mix, by chance? What exactly was in the compost?

Grass clippings, leaves, shredded paper, and lots of household garbage. It has lots of earthworms too.

Sounds like a good mix. How about posting a photo? Of the roots, not your earthworms! LOL
