The lawn maybe takes 15 minutes. How long does it take to load and unload equipment? How much time do you think they spend driving to/from your place? How much time do they spend maintaining their equipment. How much do they pay for their auto and business insurance?

You're paying for a service and the business expenses of that service just like you do with any business.

My daughter and son-in-law pay more than $20 for a similarly small yard.

You're complaining about $20? Wow... that's a tightwad unless it's a kid who lives right next door and is using YOUR mower and gas.

It's not worth loading up equipment and driving anywhere for less than $20.

I have a friend who is looking for lawn help and I WISH we could find someone that affordable.

I'd be surprised if $50 isn't a minimum charge for a lot of companies.

My thinking was that I could buy a lawnmower for about $45 and do it myself.

But would I want to? Now that you mention it, NO!

So I guess that's not an unreasonable price... You have all changed my mind!

You're not counting the "mobilization" costs to show up without being told to come,
to do the money (cash or billing) and so forth however long the cut takes.
A kid in the neighborhood is still gonna cost you $15. Maybe more.

Going rate in my area appears to be between $40 and 60/hr for mowing, and more like $90/hr for more involved work like seasonal yard clean up.

0.8 acres, $60. Our guy bought a brand new Dodge 3500 w/ Cummins, has an enclosed trailer for his zero-turn, and he mows while his partner does the edging. He's here what seems like no more than 30 minutes, but he REALLY tries to minimize drive time by scheduling everyone in the same area on the same day. Hard working guy.

The only place you're going to find a lawnmower for $45 is a beat up one on Craigslist or a possibly nice one at an estate auction, but you're taking a chance on whether it works or not. Having someone else mow for $20 is a deal, believe me.

I bought one from a local pawn shop for I think $60 three years ago. I was able to start it up so no worries if it worked or not. Three years and it runs fine. I don't mind doing it myself its good exercise. When I am not in town I pay someone to do it.

And yes like many here if you just look at the 20 minutes or so it takes a company to mow your lawn it seems over priced. But you are also paying travel time, a portion of their pick up truck, trailer, the riding mower and weed eaters and the gas to operate them as well as for their truck. As well as insurance and upkeep. In my town the city fines you if you don't keep the grass cut. I believe its over $200 if the city comes out an mows your lawn.
